Mattress Disposal, Dismantling & Recycling
The Problem
Mattresses and box springs have become an ever growing problem for America's landfills. Though they have been a thorn in the side of those operations for some time, public awareness is only now on the verge of a breakout. The following lists several of the immediate issues directly related to mattress dumping and burial at our country's landfill sites.
- Mattresses do not compact well; up to six times less than normal garbage.
- Buried components have long life span.
- Relative light weight & bulk takes up precious & valuable landfill space.
- Burying mattresses shortens the useful life of a landfill.
- Mattress springs disable and damage landfill equipment.
- Tipping fees do not cover the lost economic & opportunity costs for landfill operations.
The Solution
Gen7 Recycling will take those mattresses out of the landfill, allowing the operator to gain significant space, valuable savings and a longer life. The table below highlights just a few of the positive affects for the landfill, Gen7 Recycling and the consumer.
| For The Landfill | For Gen7 Recycling | For The Consumer |
|---|---|---|
| Significant space savings | Job creation | Eliminates bulk waste |
| Fees less than lost opportunity costs | Low fees for program feasibility | Inexpensive solution |
| Saves machinery & equipment | Smart use of components | Hassle free process |
Operations & Process
Our operations will be housed in a medium sized facility located in Indian Trail, NC, with sufficient square footage purely dedicated to the dismantling and recycling operations, where the manual labor actually takes place. Administratively, we conduct our services in the remaining office space, which allows us comfort and growth. Shortly, we intend on bringing in a compactor unit, which will allow us to significantly reduce the size of each mattress spring, allowing us to store and transport steel scrap in a more efficient, cost effective manner.
Our process is relatively straight forward. We receive mattresses and box springs from any variety of sources, such as a landfill or a consumer. We then process the unit through the dismantling process, essentially filleting the mattress from its complete form to its bare components. We separate the components and bale or compact those components, as much as possible. We recycle them through an end buyer of the scrap, whether it be the steel, foam or cotton.
Responsible Mattress Disposal & Recycling
As a simple matter of environmental responsibility, it is important to keep mattresses from being buried in our landfills. The cost of doing so is significant economically, opportunistically and generationally. Landfill operators and municipalities are best served by collecting an offsetting tipping fee and paying a mattress dismantler and recycler to reduce the negative environmental impact of mattresses and put the components back to use.
